Match Report
Saint Ronan's School Boys-U13A vs  Wellesley House
On: Tuesday, 30 Apr 2019
Venue: Away

Travelling to Wellesley House always feels like we are going on tour! Anticipation was high as we arrived in good time to the traditionally warm Wellesley welcome. A leisurely lunch of mighty ham or cheese sandwiches under the trees was followed by a solid and excitable warm up. Captain Tom won the toss and chose to bat and Arthur and Archie boldly led the way. After all the nervous energy, the first over was a maiden… and we only managed one run off the second. Fortunately, a few extras came our way and these were supplemented with a few safe singles. Then, in the fifth over, with the score a meagre 14, we lost our first wicket as Arthur was caught and bowled. Henry P combined with Archie T for a useful second wicket partnership, and in the eighth over we reached the boundary for the first time; a straight drive from Archie. An unfortunate run out in the tenth over saw Henry P back in the pavilion but we were now well set at 50/2. Archie was then bowled by a yorker from their left hander and we had to rebuild momentum. Before we did so, we lost Tom, caught. Soon after, Jemima too was caught, but not before playing the shot of the day off her pads through to the leg side boundary. We stumbled to 58/5, with just 7 overs left. But the depth in our batting showed as Will D and Hector P batted with great determination to put us back on track. They attacked the bowlers and took on the fielders. Showing his experience, Will hit 6 precious fours in a sparkling and unbeaten 38 and Hector scored an impressive 17 on debut for his new team. We rocketed along to a final 117/6 after our 20 overs. We felt that this was very much a defendable total and we were confident that if we bowled and fielded our best we would be very competitive. Arthur gave us a dream start; a beautiful delivery, just his second, clean bowled their number one batsman – bravo! At the other end, Tom followed this up by claiming the second wicket, Charlie running in to take a fine catch from fine leg. The field was electric, cheering on their bowlers as the ball flew dangerously through to our keeper Will D. After 10 overs, Wellesley were 20/2. Arthur gave the ball to his brother Henry and he broke a slowly developing partnership by clean bowling both batsmen. After 15 overs, Wellesley were 34/4 and we were in control. Some tight bowling from Henry P, Charlie S, Will H, Humphrey, Jemima, Archie and Hector, and wonderful fielding, restricted Wellesley to 57/8 in their 20 overs, giving Saint Ronan’s a 60 run win in this first round Cup match. The songs were sung loudly and proudly in the minibus on the way home – a super start to the season!
