U9A Ashford Tournament

The weather may have cooled down but the level of play shown on the pitch sure did heat up the atmosphere! Our first match was against Ashford, whose U11s had won at Eastbourne the day before. We went up 2-0, with some splendid work from Ollie H down the right hand side, creating space and producing some great crosses for the strikers to tap in. However, this lead quickly evaporated, with 2 counter-attacks. A 2-2 draw first up. The second match against Kent College was a 2-1 win, again leading by 2 and then squandering a goal from a counter. The pace of the midfield not quite quick enough going forward. A very convincing 4-0 win against King's Rochester in our 3rd game meant that we had a good chance of going top of the table. A wonderful team goal was scored, with some delightful two touch passes, with Theo P tapping it in at the 'P' spot. I was extremely happy with the team's performance at this stage and would have been happy to end the tournament on that note. However, although losing the last pool game to SV 0-2, the team had other plans. To get to the final! We beat Rose Hill 1-0 and ended up playing Kent College in the final, who we'd beaten in the pool stages. Our attacking formation was solid all afternoon but, with no substitutes, the boys at this stage were rather tired. We conceded a goal from a counter, despite Mathew B's hard effort to track back and drag the striker wide. Considering that the team had only played one match before the tournament, they should be extremely proud of their efforts and of their progression and success during the day.
