Match Report
Saint Ronan's School Boys-U11A vs  Holmewood House School
On: Wednesday, 23 Jan 2019
Venue: at Home

There is usually at least one game in the season where you have to be at your absolute best from the opening whistle to be able to compete. This was it and, in all honesty, we were not at our best. Holmewood played in a tight channel with strong, direct ball carriers who had close support on both shoulders. This direct approach, along with aggressive rucking, allowed them to dominate the first half, scoring five unanswered tries. While Saint Ronan's grew into the game, they could not execute their game-plan efficiently, mainly because of the fast defensive line speed of Holmewood. Half time gave an opportunity to 're-group,' to clarify our roles and reset. The second half was a much more keenly-contested affair. Saint Ronan's managed to keep the ball through multiple phases and quicker execution of passes meant that there was space out wide and the defence could not simply drift, as it had in the first half. Ned T finished a fine team try, running 30m down the left touchline, to score. Holmewood replied immediately, catching the Saint Ronan's back line who were slow to react to their pacy winger. Orlando S began to shine with more space and his illusive running became a feature of the half. It was, however, Matthew G-R who stood out in the second half. His direct running and sensible distribution showed his ability to quickly learn from the mistakes of the first half and he scored a well earned try. Final score 7 - 2 to Holmewood.
