Match Report
Saint Ronan's School Girls U9 Sky vs  Dulwich Prep Cranbrook
On: Thursday, 24 Jan 2019
Venue: Away

The girls played a super game of hockey on a chilly afternoon on the DCPS astro. The game was evenly-matched throughout, with plenty of end-to-end action. We didn’t quite find our usual form in the first half, slapping the ball straight back down the middle to DCPS, in a game of hockey ping-pong, instead of trying to pass the ball wide to players waiting in space. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 1-0 to DCPS. Following a quick team chat in the break, we set out in the second quarter to stretch the DCPS defence by spreading out and using our triangles and wide angles in order to connect our passes. This transformed our play and the girls were soon rewarded with an equalizer scored by Freya B. The girls continued to build on their hockey throughout the game. Alice M, Athena M and Freya B worked well together in attack, taking the ball wide down the wing and then crossing it into the D. Molly Z held her space well and fed the D with some good passes. Izzy A did a good job in mid-field, mopping up the ball as soon as DCPS tried to forge an attack, and Daisy A and Michelle VDB were reliable in defence, calmly stopping the ball before clearing it out to the wings. Having equalized, DCPS managed to sneak another ball into the goal to take the lead once more but our reply was strong and assertive and it wasn’t long before Freya B (well-supported by Alice M) managed to score again, levelling the score at 2 a –piece. We almost managed a 3rd goal in the closing minutes but, despite our best efforts and some courageous and determined defending from DCPS, we couldn’t quite manage to move the ball over the line. All in all, a superb team effort. Players of the Match: Michelle VDB, Alice M, Daisy A
