Match Report
Saint Ronan's School Mixed-U12A vs  Ashdown House
On: Tuesday, 13 Nov 2018
Venue: Away

On Tuesday 13th November we enjoyed an U10-U13 swimming gala at Ashdown House. The first race was the tough individual medley. Clara S and Oscar B bravely volunteered for the U10s and came third and fourth respectively. Darcey G swam superbly to win the U11 individual medley, in a time of 68.52s, with Edward M ensuring maximum points for the event by coming second in 72.94s. For the U12s, Mathilda F came second in 71.84s and Floss S third in 74.87s. William H came second for the U13s in 60.18s (the winning time was an impressive 49.68s) and Lettice A courageously swam up a year group to claim fourth in 75.03s.

In the U10 backstroke, Edward B (37.56s) and Levi R (38.14s) came third and fourth respectively. Rory B won the U11 backstroke (by a hundredth of a second!) in a time of 32.14s, with Wilby W coming in fourth in 35.90s. Matilda E won the U12 backstroke in a very impressive 29.90s and Mathilda F tied for third in 35.77s. In the U13 backstroke, Martha R came third 29.98s, just a hundredth of a second in front of William H, who was fourth.

The breaststroke was next and, for the U10s, Oscar B came second in 39.22s and Florence M came third in 40.17s. For the U11s, Rachel B came second and Wilby W was third (unfortunately we missed the times for this race). Freya G and Bea W had not yet raced and they were desperate to get going; they put their energy and enthusiasm to good effect, with Freya winning the U12 breaststroke in 34.07s and Bea coming second in 36.22s. Lucy G (33.17s) and Martha R (33.60s) came second and third in the U13 breaststroke.

Ethan H swam a wonderful length of butterfly to win the U10 event in a time of 16.52s –brilliant! Flora H came third, in 17.27s. Hannah C (34.27s) and Matthew G-R (35.27s) came second and fourth respectively in the U11 butterfly. The U12 butterfly was won by Eleanor S in a great time of 30.90s. Floss S came fourth in 35.84s. Daisy E and Jemima S came second and third in the U13 butterfly, with Daisy swimming the two lengths in 29.09s and Jemima in 29.47s.

The two teams looked very equally-matched and, with relays worth double points, the results of the relays would be crucial in determining the eventual winners. Edward B, Ethan H, Oscar B and Freddie S gave us the perfect start by winning the U10 medley relay. Florence M, Hebe L, Flora H and Clara S came fourth. Then Matthew G-R, Bruno H, Edward M and Nicholas L came second in the U11 medley relay, in 60.32s. The girls were just behind in third; Darcey, Rachel, Hannah and Lottie finishing in 60.87s. These two events had given points evenly to Saint Ronan’s and Ashdown House but the next event, the U12 medley relay, would see the balance shift towards Saint Ronan’s, as our strong U12 girls came first (56.70s) and second (58.93s) in the medley relay! The U13s managed to hold onto this lead by battling into second and third in the medley relay, once again helped out by the keen U12 girls.

The final events were the front crawl relays. Our U10s managed second and third, as did the U11s. The U12s again gave us the edge, with a first and second, and in the final race the U13s maintained the lead by coming second and third. The final results were incredibly close: Ashdown House 217 and Saint Ronan’s 225!

Many thanks to Ashdown House for hosting the gala and providing times. Our children enjoy this gala as it provides opportunity for boys and girls to compete with and against each other and Ashdown House are wonderful, warm hosts. Thanks to Desmond and Uncle Alan for driving us carefully there and back. Thank you to Janet for the coaching and well done to all our swimmers – you made us very proud! The biggest thanks go to our wonderful parents, who support us strongly and in so many ways. We take a break from the swimming now and start again in the summer term.
