Match Report
Saint Ronan's School Boys-U12A vs  Marlborough House School
On: Wednesday, 28 Nov 2018
Venue: Away

The U12s dominated the first half of their match at Marlborough House. Our rucking practice rewarded us: with our speed to the ball, precision over the ball and low body positions, we had plenty of quick ball with which to play. Tom P and Archie M, in particular, rucked well. Oli L at hooker won us a couple of heels against the head in the scrum and Kit was lively at scrumhalf. Barnaby, Jasper and Jack F carried the ball forward effectively but credit to the Marlborough House boys who always managed to scramble back and defend. We made lots of passes and controlled the game by taking the ball both forward and wide. The pitch was big and we never really pressed hard on the try line, despite being in control. At half time we spoke about being more confident and more direct when carrying the ball forward, not going to ground so easily, rather making tacklers really commit. With some proper hard running, we felt we could break through the tackles and go score. It was a moment like this that would prove the difference in the end. In the second half, Marlborough House had more of the ball but, as conditions deteriorated in the wet, we bravely persisted with our passing game and unfortunately we knocked on frequently. Marlborough House kicked often but Hector was a rock at the back, fielding the swirling ball brilliantly. Our wings Henry, Gethan and the strong tackling Jaxson provided support for Hector by racing back when a kick went through or over. Marlborough House came close to scoring but we managed to win a penalty and clear our line. Then, in the last minute, we had an attacking penalty and, thinking fast, Kit tapped quickly and set off alone on a powerful and determined run, beating four or five defenders before scoring the winning try!
